Size, Weight & Medium: 40 x 14cm x 17cm/5kg-Est./Serpentine Stone
Wise One is a serpentine stone sculpture by Zimbabwean artist Davidson Chakawa. It was part of a collection brought into the UK in 1993 by Edward Hildyard and featured in the Five Ways Brighton Festival Open Houses exhibition at his home in Fiveways, Brighton.
Chakawa, born in 1950, was a resident of the Tengenege artist colony in Guruve, Zimbabwe. He was mentored by renowned first-generation sculptor Henry Munyaradzi in 1981, from whom he likely adopted the distinctive round eyes seen in many of his works.
Chakawa’s sculptures have been showcased in several notable exhibitions, including the National Art Gallery in Harare and Beelden op de Berg in Holland. He primarily works with serpentine stone, favored for its fine detail and workability.
We’ve titled this piece Wise One to reflect the serene and thoughtful expression it captures. While we don't have a certificate of authenticity, it is signed by the artist and features key elements characteristic of Chakawa's work.
