Global Influence, Local Roots: Owen Mlungisi’s Impact in Stone Sculpture

Owen Mlungisi

Born in Chiredzi and based in Harare, Zimbabwe, Owen Mlungisi is a respected sculptor known for his dynamic approach to abstract, figurative, and functional art. His journey in stone sculpting began after completing his O'Levels at Hippo High School in 2002, under the mentorship of his uncle, sculptor Wisdom Zinyeka. For three years, Owen honed his skills as an assistant before further refining his craft alongside his brother, Felix Mlungisi, who remains a collaborative influence in his work.

In 2013, Owen expanded into functional art through collaborations with international designers, including Fair Trade Designers and House by the Sea from Denmark, earning a certificate in Functional Art for his innovative designs. His work has since been showcased in multiple exhibitions, including South Africa's Sukkah Gallery, where his unique pieces received notable acclaim.

Working primarily with resilient materials such as fruit serpentine stone and springstone, Owen is recognized for his skill in creating both intricate and large-scale sculptures that convey expressive, organic forms. In addition to producing commissioned works, including the Word on Fire logo sculpture in 2022, Owen is committed to elevating Zimbabwean stone sculpture to a global platform. His work is not only a reflection of his cultural heritage but also a testament to his ambition to bring Zimbabwean artistry to the world stage through his brand, O.Mlusculpt.
