Tonderai Sowa

Born in 1978 in the scenic town of Nyanga, in Zimbabwe’s eastern highlands, Tonderai Sowa discovered his passion for sculpture early in life. In 1995, he began learning the craft under the guidance of his stepfather, Julius Chinhoyi, a respected sculptor. Over the next two years, Tonderai refined his skills through close collaboration with Julius, laying the foundation for his artistic journey. He later worked alongside Rosemary Chakanyuka in Chitungwiza for another two years, further expanding his creative experience. By 2002, Tonderai decided to strike out on his own, pursuing a full-time career as an independent artist.

A Life Sculpted by Love and Connection

Tonderai credits his stepfather, Julius Chinhoyi, not only for teaching him the techniques of stone carving but also for instilling in him a love for people. "He always taught me to socialize with people," Tonderai recalls, "and by so doing, I ended up doing everything with love. When I started carving, love became the theme of my sculptures." This ethos of love and connection has shaped Tonderai’s work, infusing his pieces with deep emotional resonance and meaning.

A Career on the Rise

Tonderai’s career took a significant leap forward in 2010 when his talent was recognized by Guruve Sculpture Gallery. With this newfound international exposure, Tonderai’s reputation grew, bringing opportunities to showcase his work on global platforms.

Career Highlights:

  • October 2013: Awarded second prize in the ‘Celebration’ Art Exhibition and Competition, held at the Chitungwiza Arts Centre to mark its 15th Anniversary.
  • February–April 2014: Selected as one of four Zimbabwean artists—alongside Itayi Mupumha—to participate in an Artist Exchange Program in Luanda, Angola, collaborating with Angolan artist Jao Mayembe at Sonkala Yonkala.
