Rufaro Murenza - An Impressive Record of Achievements

Rufaro Murenza boasts an impressive array of artistic accolades. In 2020, he secured his fifth consecutive nomination as a finalist in the esteemed National Arts Merit Awards (NAMA), a testament to his enduring talent and dedication.

Rufaro was born in Zimbabwe in 1980 and began his artistic journey while pursuing his 'O' levels. He had the opportunity to work alongside renowned Zimbabwean sculptor Joe Mutasa as his assistant at Chapungu Sculpture Park in Msasa, Harare.

At Chapungu, Rufaro immersed himself in the works of esteemed artists such as Tapfuma Gutsa, Nicholas Mukomberanwa, and Eddie Masaya, who were pioneering granite carving. In 1998, Rufaro and Joe attended a transformative workshop in granite carving at Chapungu with Joram Mariga and two visiting Japanese sculptors.

Inspired and motivated, Rufaro's career soared. He showcased his talent in Belgium in 1998 alongside his mentor Joe Mutasa, resulting in a highly successful exhibition where all their pieces were sold, and numerous orders were secured.

After years of collaboration with Joe, Rufaro felt ready to forge his own path. Since then, he has achieved remarkable success, including four consecutive years of recognition at NAMA (National Arts Merit Awards).

In 2020, Rufaro Murenza received his fifth consecutive nomination as a finalist in the prestigious National Arts Merit Awards (NAMA)!

His exceptional talent was recognized when he clinched the 3D sculpture category award at the 2015 NAMA awards, solidifying his position as a deserving winner.

Rufaro's artistic prowess also earned him finalist nominations in the NAMA awards in 2014, 2016, and 2017.
