Alfred Mutuke: Artist Biobraphy

Crafting Zimbabwean Traditions for a Global Audience

Alfred Mutuke

Born on March 9, 1985, in the Serima area of Gutu, Masvingo, Zimbabwe, Alfred Mutuke discovered his artistic passion early in life. During his childhood, he carved wooden objects and cooking sticks, cultivating his creativity. After completing his primary education at Matizha Primary School and secondary studies at Chikwerengwe Secondary School, Alfred moved to Harare in 2001 to pursue his artistic ambitions.

In Harare, he met renowned artist L. Gonde, who mentored him in stone sculpture, teaching him essential skills such as washing and finishing stones. By the end of 2002, with Gonde’s guidance and inspiration, Alfred began creating his own sculptures. In 2004, he established himself as an independent artist.

Alfred works primarily with hard stones, including springstone and fruit stone, mastering techniques that have earned him recognition beyond Zimbabwe. His sculptures are admired worldwide, with pieces sold in countries such as the USA, Canada, and the UK. Today, Alfred is a proud member of the Chitungwiza Arts Centre, contributing to Zimbabwe’s vibrant sculptural tradition.
