Antony Masamba: Artist Biography

Sculpting Love, Tradition, and Creativity into Timeless Art

Antony Masamba

Antony Masamba, born on 12 June 1973, discovered his passion for art through the legacy of his grandfather, a talented woodcarver. This early exposure to creativity left a lasting impression and inspired him to pursue sculpting as a way to honor his roots while developing his own artistic voice. Raised with a totem (mutupo) of Milanzi and a rural home in Mozambique, Antony's journey reflects a deep connection to tradition and family heritage.

A pivotal figure in Antony’s artistic development was the late Albert Nathan Mamvura, a renowned Zimbabwean sculptor. Under Mamvura’s guidance, Antony refined his skills and began shaping his career. With 21 years of experience, Antony has become an established artist in his own right, consistently evolving while remaining true to his creative vision.

Antony works with a variety of stones, each chosen for its distinct qualities—Cobalt, Springstone, Fruit Serpentine, Opal, and Flower Serpentine. His artistic focus lies in Creative Abstract sculptures, transforming raw stone into unique, imaginative forms. Deeply inspired by the concept of love, Antony believes that love has the power to transform enemies into friends—a philosophy that infuses his work with meaning and emotional depth.

Throughout his career, Antony has garnered recognition for his craftsmanship. In 2007, he won 2nd Prize in the “10 Years of Achievement” competition held at the Chitungwiza Arts Centre. His works have been showcased at various exhibitions, including Chitungwiza Arts Centre's 10 Years of Achievement (2007), Rebirth (2015), and The Journey (2016), which celebrated creativity and community connection. Additionally, Antony’s sculptures have featured prominently in international exhibitions with Guruve Limited, UK, from 2007 to 2016, introducing his art to a global audience.

Looking to the future, Antony aims to expand his artistic reach by conducting workshops in Europe and across the region. He also dreams of opening a school of art where he can mentor upcoming artists and share his passion for creativity.

His personal motto, “To create new things and maintain my form of art,” captures the essence of his dedication to innovation while staying grounded in his artistic roots. Beyond sculpting, Antony enjoys exploring other creative ventures, always seeking ways to grow as an artist.

Antony Masamba’s sculptures are a reflection of his journey—rooted in tradition, enriched by love, and driven by the desire to create meaningful art that transcends cultural boundaries and connects people on a deeper level.
