Born in 1982 in Chitungwiza, Zimbabwe, Ishmael Chitiyo’s life has been shaped by resilience, creativity, and an enduring passion for sculpture. Orphaned at a young age, he faced significant challenges, leaving school at 16 with limited options. Yet, through art, Ishmael found both purpose and a path forward.

A Journey Rooted in Family and Mentorship

Ishmael's first steps into the world of stone carving came under the guidance of his older brother, Solomon, who taught him the fundamentals of sculpting. Eager to grow, he later worked alongside Ignatius Zhuwakiyi, a prominent young artist known for his innovative style. During this formative period, Ishmael also drew inspiration from Sylvester Mubayi, a celebrated first-generation Shona sculptor. Mubayi’s mentorship not only refined Ishmael’s skills but also deepened his understanding of traditional themes in Shona art.

After honing his craft under the guidance of these influential figures, Ishmael eventually embarked on his solo artistic journey, establishing himself as an independent sculptor.
