Size, Weight & Medium: 59 x 16 x 13/15kg-Est./Serpentine Stone
"First Pregnancy" is a stone sculpture carved from hard serpentine by Zimbabwean artist Staycot Tahwa. This piece was part of a collection brought into the UK in 1993 by Edward Hildyard and featured in the Five Ways Brighton Festival Open Houses exhibition at his home in Fiveways, Brighton.
Staycot Tahwa, a second-generation artist from the renowned Tengenenge Sculpture Village, has gained international recognition for his work. In this sculpture, which we've titled "First Pregnancy," he beautifully captures the figure of a young village woman proudly displaying her first pregnancy, a tribute to the strength and pride of motherhood in traditional Zimbabwean culture.
While we don’t have a provenance document for this sculpture, the artist's signature and its striking similarity to his other works make it easily identifiable.
